Note: In fan fiction, we misname "serials" as "series". By definition, most fan fiction "series" aren't series at all, but rather, they are "serials".

Serial is a term for a format by which a literary or dramatic work is produced and published in installments. Each installment is dependent on its precursor and successor since they tell a single, continuously evolving story with a unified plot and set of characters.

More generally, a serial is a work issued under the same title in a succession of discrete parts, usually numbered (or dated) and appearing at regular or irregular intervals with no predetermined conclusion.
